PSU’s Hackenberg leads roster of Lancaster QB showcase

There aren’t many big-time recruiting showcase events in the Mid-Atlantic region but Jim Cantafio is trying to change that.

The Pennsylvania Hall of Fame coach, who is at Cedar Cliff High now, is running the Elite Top 25 Showcase Camp Friday in Lancaster, Pa. and has a talented roster of players coming.

“The first thing you need to know, is that I’m passionate about quarterback play,” said Cantafio, whose tight end at Camp Hill is Adam Breneman, a Penn State recruit and the number one ranked tight end in the nation. “My goal is to run the best quarterback camp on the East coast. I’ve been running camps forever but there is really nothing big on the East coast.”

The Elite Top 25 Showcase is in its second year. The first one was on the University of Maryland campus last year. NCAA rules changes prohibit these types of events from being on campuses now so Cantafio moved it to Lanco Fieldhouse.

Christian Hackenberg leads an impressive roster of players that will be participating.

Hackenberg, like Breneman, is a Penn State recruit and is rated as the nation’s top quarterback for the class of 2013 by Rivals.

In addition, Syracuse commit Austin Wilson of East Pennsboro High, will also be in attendance.

Other noted 2013 quarterback recruits that will be in Lancaster Friday include Brandon Bossard (Methacton), Kyle Lauletta (Downingtown East), Brennan Scott (Manheim Township), Adam Sahd (Penn Manor), Alex Werner (Bishop McDevitt), Matt Foltz (Donegal) and Chris Geiss (Great Valley).

In addition, a couple of highly touted 2014 prospects in Andrew Ford (Cedar Cliff) and Mike Boguski (Trinity).

Cantafio, though, thinks that everyone that is attending has a chance to be recruited.

“Some of these guys are really good but haven’t gotten the exposure or play in a running offense or whatever,” the coach said. “But we think they can be good players at the college level and would like to see them get exposure.

“Our whole idea is to prepare kids for when they go to those college camps.”

The morning session Friday will teach the skills that the players will be evaluated on in the afternoon. There will be three-step drops, five-step drops and sprint out drills.

The afternoon session will see the quarterbacks compete in each of the disciplines. The player that accumulates the most points during the afternoon competition will be the winner.

The event begins 9 a.m. Friday, June 29 at Lanco Fieldhouse in Lancaster, Pa.
